Demo concept. The novel's central theme — load-bearing on character motivations.
Grief, in this book, is not an emotion the characters feel — it's a room they walk into when they enter the house. The novel's central metaphor: people leave a pressure behind; you walk into it, and for a moment, you forget who you were before.
Iris's grief is for her aunt, but more for the version of herself that her aunt knew. Eleanor's grief is older and quieter; she does not enter the house at all.
